- What is the difference between a air-cooled process chiller and a water-cooled process chiller?

An air-cooled chiller uses fans to expel heat away from the condensers out into open air. These units are typically located outdoors with the exception of split-system units. Split-system chillers have the controls and main unit indoors with connections to expel heat out to an outdoor condensing unit. Water-cooled chillers are packaged together and can be placed indoors or outdoors. Unlike air-cooled units, water-cooled chillers cycle water from the process to be cooled through facility water or a water tower.

- Air-cooled chillers typically have cheaper upfront and operating costs. Water-cooled chillers require extensive piping and water operating costs.

These units have lower required maintenance, as they do not have to worry about the winterization and cleaning of external copper piping.
- Air-cooled chillers are typically located outside, therefore saving indoor space. These units can be located on a roof or away from operations.
- What are the benefits of a water-cooled chiller?

Water-cooled chillers run much quieter than air-cooled units as they do not have large condenser fans.
- Can be located inside as the cooling is done within the unit and heat is not expelled into the open air.
- These chillers can be operated at much more precise temperatures than air-cooled units. Especially in extreme climate locations.

- What is A2L?

A2L refers to environmental safety classifications for low toxicity and slightly flammable refrigerants. As of 2026, the refrigerants R454A and R454C have been added to our product line in compliance with those guidelines. These refrigerants lower the chiller’s environmental impact all while keeping a similar efficiency to older refrigerants such as R407C.
